5 Self-Care Tips To Keep Rosacea At Bay
Over the years, I’ve had to learn how to manage my skin, big time. Dealing with hormonal acne and rosacea at the same time is no joke. Acne often requires harsh ingredients like acid to heal and clear, but those are no-nos when you have rosacea. Choosing the right skin care products is always my first priority—and beyond that, tweaking my lifestyle choices to better serve my body has been a game-changer. Here are the top five lessons I learned:
1. Choose effective skin care made especially for sensitive skin, like the Burt's Bees Sensitive Line.
I particularly love the Burt's Bees Sensitive Daily Moisturizing Cream—it keeps my skin healthy and hydrated without irritating my blemishes or instigating a rosacea flare-up.
2. Minimize pitta energy in your body.
Pitta is a term that comes from ayurveda, and it translates to "heat"—for me, it means cleaning up my diet and avoiding caffeine and alcohol. I know this isn’t everyone’s favorite tip, but I find that it really does work.
3. Commit to a daily meditation practice.
Skin and meditation don’t sound like they’re linked, but they are. Committing to a daily seated practice is hugely helpful for my skin issues. They keep my nervous system calm and provide time to connect with myself, which means that stress is less likely to cause a breakout.
4. Wear sun protection.
Personally, I know that I’ll become Ms. Lobster if I’m out in the sun without protection for more than five minutes. Grab a hat, your stylish summer scarves, and the SPF before heading out in the sunshine. Sun protection makes all the difference in keeping my skin happy.
5. Move gently.
Instead of doing an intense workout, try yoga, Pilates, or walking—especially if you’re stressed or on the brink of a breakout. Choosing a gentle movement modality is easy on the nervous system, helps calm anxiety, and, as a result, can help reduce the chance of a rosacea-related episode.
