It should come as no surprise that plants and trees are pretty incredible. They clean the air, create more grounded energy, connect us to nature, provide food, and so much more. Here are a few reasons that I consider them such a vital part of good feng shui, inside your home and out:

1. They might promote a healthier frame of mind.

Plants help out human health in so many ways. Take gardening, which has been shown to promote mental well-being, improve sleep1, and boost mood in certain populations. In some cultures like Japan, forest bathing excursions (essentially meditative walks in the forest) are used to reduce stress, boost the immune system, increase mental focus, and create a more balanced life. And even if you don't have a garden space or access to a forest, it's easy to bring plant power into your own home.

2. They symbolize expansion.

Plants are symbols of growth and prosperity. When you see and feel the energy of plants and trees growing around you, I believe it inspires dynamic growth in your life too.

3. They can help clear the air.

While they won't replace your air filter anytime soon, plants are capable of removing small amounts of common toxins (formaldehyde, benzene, and carbon monoxide, to name a few) from the air. Easy-to-maintain species like spider plants, aloe vera, snake plants, and peace lily plants can grow almost anywhere and keep your home and office feeling fresher.

4. They bring more beauty into our lives.

Plants bring beauty and freshness to a space, and they help keep us feeling more present. The grounding force of the Earth is powerful. One commonly referenced study2 even found that hospital patients who had views of lush green landscapes from their windows tended to heal more quickly.

5. They're just downright cool.

Research has only scratched the surface on the wide world of plant consciousness, but studies have shown that plants and trees can communicate with each other (!), and they respond to our attention, too. Taking the time to connect to greenery can remind you to foster more of a connection with everyone—and everything—around you.

Plant power can help you to create even more of a sanctuary at home, but beware: Once you begin collecting your plant family, you might find it hard to stop!
